5th Rare Diseases Summer School

Wednesday, June 7th to Friday, June 9th 2017 Tagungszentrum Schloss Au, Wädenswil (on lake Zurich)

The 5th Rare Diseases Summer School was attended by 24 (14 females, 10 males) young clinicians and researchers, half of which had a background in Natural Science and the rest in Medicine, Social Science, Nursing and Genetic Counselling. The participants came from Switzerland (79%) and from 4 other countries among which, for the first time, Costa Rica.

The interactive nature of the Summer School was highlighted and particularly appreciated this year. All the participants rated both parallel workshops as good or excellent with regards to their interactive character. Moreover, they were able to talk to all the presenters of the posters they were interested in. Our Summer School therefore once more proved to be a unique opportunity of networking among participants and between participants and speakers.

For the first time, thanks to the Swiss Academy of Medical Science, we were able to give grants to ten students to cover their registration fee. This has increased the percentage of attending PhD students to 42% this year. We intend to apply again next year for funding in order to provide further support to the students applying to our Summer School.
